Choosing A Mini Notebook Computer

Posted on 22 March 2010 by Tile

Mini notebook computers (or netbooks) are awesome. Due to their size, they are great on power, super light and very portable. That means longer battery life while you are on the go, no hassles just a laptop that does what you want, when you want.

A Difficult Choice

Selecting a laptop from dozens of mini notebook computers can be tough. Due to their size their specifications can be a lot lower than that of a regular sized laptop. Below are some things to look for that will ensure you get a mini notebook computer that you will love.

Brand

Unlike some products, when it comes to portable computers, brand does matter. Cheaper brands tend to have flimsy screen hinges and faulty plugs. Of course these problems can happen with more prestigious brands but are more common with cheaper brands.

A Toshiba, Lenovo, Dell, Compaq or HP mini notebook computer are my prefered choices in terms of brand. They all provide a good balance between quality, power and look. On the other hand I tend to avoid Acer mini notebook computer models because they have really bad screen hinges with limited range and stiffness. On the other hand they tend to be one of the cheapest models so if cost is your number one then Acer is the one for you. In the end you are still getting a brand product that is well known throughout the computer industry.

Brands like Vaio, Ferrari and Lamborghini offer no addition features other than brand. For the increase in price it is definitely not worth it.

Specifications

I won’t go into a lot of detail about amounts of RAM, CPU output, hard drive space, etc. because technology moves so fast this post would become outdated within a couple weeks of me posting. Instead I will point out some questions you should ask yourself?

  • Does it have enough USB slots for your needs (3+ is good)?
  • Do you need slots for SD, XD or another memory type card?
  • Are you using it for movies and music? You may need:
    • HDMI output
    • Digital audio output
    • Large hard drive
  • Does the RAM and CPU speed comfortably meet the specifications of the Operating System (you never want to just be meeting minimum requirements for an OS)
  • Do you need wireless LAN connectivity?

Screen Size

Most mini notebook computers come with a 10.1″ screen (advertised as 10″). If you want a larger screen than you are actually looking at a small sized laptop with a 12″-13″ screen. With this you will also get the capability of a DVD-ROM so it may actually work out better to your goals.

Smaller screens are available, all the way down to 7″ screens like the One A110. I don’t recommend this if you have poor eyesight, instead stick with a 10.1″ screen like the best selling Dell Inspiron (with 6 hours of battery life to boot).

I hope this info helps you find the best mini notebook computer. If you have any questions, just ask them in the comments below and I’ll see if I can help.

How To Fix Your Broken Laptop

Posted on 21 March 2010 by Tile

One of the limiting factors about a laptop is that because it is in one piece repairs usually need to be done by an authorised technician and can therefore be quite expensive. If for some reason your laptop does break here are some methods to go about fixing it.

Broken Laptop Screen

You have two choices here:

a) Take your laptop to a computer store or arrange for someone like the guys at Laptop.com.au to pick up your laptop and take it away for repairs. Be prepared for a bill of a few hundred dollars. What ever you do, do not pay the manufacturer to repair the laptop, at the rates they charge you may as well get a new one.

b) Repair it yourself following a comprehensive online guide and buying a replacement laptop screen. If you choose this option you will want to have some technical skills and confidence in yourself to complete the task. At the bottom are a couple of guides I recommend, Tom’s Guide even helps you identify which part of the screen may be broken.

Broken Laptop Touch Pad

First things first, check that you have not just simply deactivated the touch pad with one of the function (Fn) combinations. Next check the mouse settings under Control Panel > Mouse and ensure that the mouse pad hasn’t been deactivated. Below are the settings for my Dell laptop (click to enlarge).

Finally, try reinstalling the drivers. Download the latest off the manufacturers website. If you’ve had a play (and asked your 12 year old son/brother/cousin/nephew to check as well) and still can’t get it to work then it may indeed be broken.

A way around this is to buy a portable USB laptop mouse for around $30 which you simply plug in when you want to use the computer. These come super small now and are very portable. If that isn’t acceptable to your needs, you may need to send the laptop away to get repaired. However at the prices you will be charged you can just pick up a new laptop.

Missing Laptop Keys

Missing keys are really annoying and also quite common. I’ve found that young children playing with laptops are exceptionally crafty at making all of the keys disappear.

One or two missing is usually pretty manageable but when it gets to 4 or more, or if it’s a critical key it’s time to replace. Websites like LaptopKey.com and IndividualKeys.com sell single replacement keys for your laptop. Once you get the keys it’s simply a matter of clipping the key back into place.

Missing Laptop Charger

Most electronics and computer stores sell replacement laptop chargers. Make sure you get the correct power (Watts) and current (Amps) rating to match your laptop. You can usually find this out by visiting the manufacturers website or just Googleing your laptop model.

Shops in the US that sell replacment chargers:

Shops in Australia that sell replacement chargers:

  • Dick Smith Electronics
  • Tandy
  • Harvey Norman
  • JB HIFI

Dead Battery

The same protocol can be followed for finding a new replacement charger. Always check the battery is actually dead with a multimeter before hand. Despose of the old battery at an appropriate site, most electronics stores take old electronics and batteries.

Just Does Not Start

Try the following checklist:

  • Check that the battery is not dead
  • Check that it’s not just the screen, if you get any lights along the front it may just be the screen backlight
  • Call tech support for the laptop manufacturer
  • Sell broken laptop to an online merchant

Finding a Ladies Laptop Bag

Posted on 15 March 2010 by Tile

A ladies bag is one of her most important accessories. So what do you do if you need to carry around a laptop? The last thing that you want is an ugly boring looking laptop bag to lug around work or school. It’s worth investigating a ladies laptop bag.

Laptop bags for ladies need to serve several purposes. They must:

  • double as a purse
  • provide a pocket separate from the laptop to store typical purse items
  • look fashionable and stylish

These factors are more important then a pocket for your mobile phone and easy access to pens which is typical in a normal laptop bag. This is because these bags cater more towards what men like, an unfortunate remnant of a once men dominated society. These are also the bags that line the shelves in most computer shops and stores.

There are a few brands that specialize in just making ladies laptop bags. McKlein, Kensington and Laurex are some that I recommend that both look good and are great quality. Have a browse around and see which ones you like the look of.

For good shopping options try out the following places:
